Today’s catch comes from one of the best rappers around today, and an artists that I don’t usually play on Chillville. I’m talking about Kendrick Lamar. He just released a brand new album called Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, his first album in five years. It contains collaborations with Ghostface Killah, Sampha, Mick Jenkins, and on today’s catch Beth Gibbons. Yes…I’m talking about Portishead’s Beth Gibbons. Today’s catch is called “Mother I Sober” and is by far one of his most powerful songs ever. He speaks of painful memories, his mother’s sexual assault, the lingering image of her bruised face, the violent retribution carried out by his uncle that begat its own traumas: “Till this day can’t look her in the eyes, pain is takin’ over/Blame myself, you never felt guilt till you felt it sober.” Gibbons voice is like the angel on his shoulder trying to give him peace as the song intensifies. This is definitely on the list of best songs & albums of 2022. You can listen to today’s catch “Mother I Sober (ft. Beth Gibbons of Portishead)” by Kendrick Lamar in the YouTube player below. Good things!
