Yesterday Shady Grove, and Austin staple, announced they were closing for good.
When I first moved to Austin so long ago, my sister came to visit and we had no clue what to do to entertain her… the only area I knew of besides downtown was around Barton Springs. We started the night at Peter Pan Mini Golf. My sis, who is not a drinker, decided we should fill giant cups to take along consisting of Malibu Rum and Dr. Pepper. By the fifth hole in the August evening heat, our stomachs were churning and we had to get something other than alcohol and pure sugar in our bellies. While walking down Barton Springs looking for food, I remembered a really cool spot with an outdoor lawn and live music that would be the perfect “Austin” place to take her. We ended up hanging there the rest of the night instead of venturing to 6th Street.
So many special places are forever leaving Austin. Shady Grove wasn’t my regular stop but it was one of the first places I ever ate at in Austin and spent several years celebrating SXSW and my birthday with friends there. My tiny, cold, dark heart goes out to all of these places that made Austin.. Austin. Hopefully this doesn’t become another condo (which is sad to say that this is so cliche yet so real).
