On A WTF Wednesday…

wtf wednesday

We binged Stranger Things 3 through the holiday weekend, and were reminded how cool Peter Gabriel’s take on David Bowie’s “Heroes” was:

Backstory on the tune: last decade, the former Genesis frontman planned an album of covers of songs from artists he admired, to be accompanied by a collection of those artists covering Gabriel tunes. As it turned out, the latter LP was never completed, with Bowie among the artists who refused to provide a song (though “Heroes” co-writer Brian Eno did). Gabriel’s covers of others’ songs was released as Scratch My Back in 2010.  Oh, and a note on “Heroes”‘ use in Stranger Things–its inclusion in the closing credits in S3: E8 follows a previous appearance back in S1–closing the episode in which a body believed to be that of Will Byers was found in the quarry.

Also WTF-worthy is Beck’s guest appearance along with his producer and pal Greg Kurstin’s side gig, The Bird and The Bee, on a jazzy new take on Van Halen’s “Hot For Teacher”:

The cover is set to appear on TBATB’s tribute album Interpreting The Masters Volume Two:  A Tribute To Van Halen, out next month. The second Masters volume follows a 2010 album-length nod to the greatness of Hall and Oates.

And, as they’re in town this week for a pair of shows and a 101X-Session, Seattle’s The Head and The Heart are WTF-worthy with a cover of their own, this take on Kiwi new wavers Crowded House’s excellent “Don’t Dream It’s Over”:

Tickets remain for the second The Head and The Heart show at ACL Live tonight.
