With last week’s loss of psychedelic legend/Austin native Roky Erickson, I found myself listening to a lot from the psych genre in the last several days, which led me to a pile of tunes from 90s-era mainstays The Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre–and their by-products. Included among the latter: a two-piece that falls into the camps of both the aforementioned friends/rivals (see the doc Dig! for more on the drama between those two). The Vacant Lots hail from Bernie-land–Burlington, Vermont–and just came off the road with the Dandies, supporting new music released on BJM frontman Anton Newcombe’s boutique label, A Recordings. Check out the Anton-produced “Bells”, below. It’s among the newest, and I just can’t get it off repeat. I’m sure Roky would approve (and probably did–the two have shared billing on Austin Psychfest/Levitation).
And while I generally try to ask “WTF?” about a single track a week, whaddya gonna do when Miley Cyrus decides to cover Nine Inch Nails, and does so with Trent’s approval?!
