Marcus Mumford, lead singer of Mumford and Sons, released his debut solo album on Friday. The self-titled album features collaborations with Brandi Carlile, Phoebe Bridgers and Clairo as well as songs co-written by Tobias Jesso Jr. and Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes.

In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, Mumford shared his thoughts on the new album: “It’s a record about freedom and it’s a record about healing. I think, certainly in my story, it’s important to face up to some of the gnarlier stuff first in order to get to that place of freedom and healing. In the way we’ve rolled out this record, it starts with some of the hardest stuff. If people can get through that, it’s worth the wait, I think, because we do get to a place where it is fun.”

Mumford has already released three singles off the album, “Better Off High,” “Grace” and “Cannibal,” which came with a Steven Spielberg-directed music video. A tour to support the new solo album kicks off September 19th in Boulder with dates in Los Angeles, Nashville and more. Danielle Ponder and The A’s will support on select dates.
