Dr. Peniel Joseph
Today we were honored to have Dr. Peniel Joseph on the show. He is a professor at the University of Texas’ LBJ School of Public Affairs and is the director for the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy. He was kind enough discuss with us the systemic racism in Austin and how we can fight to change them. Rather than try to condense his words into a brief blog post, we encourage you to listen to the entire interview below. But, he did recommend several books worth mentioning if you are, like ourselves, are trying to learn more.
His own book, The Sword and the Shield: The Revolutionary Lives of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr.
How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X Kendi.
White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo
Thick: And Other Essays by Tressie McMillian Cottom

That Guy
On an infinitely less important note, You Know What You Should Do On Your Diet Guy, don’t be That Guy. Jason has been crushing it on his weight loss odyssey, and for him the key has been simple. His nutritionist tells him what to eat and he eats it. But that hasn’t stopped his friends from questioning the program. He was explaining to one of his friends about how he either eats a protein bar for breakfast, or if he has time, he can have two bacons and four eggs. He friend suggested he swap that for grilled chicken and spinach, and pestered Jason until he agreed to ask his nutritionist if that was acceptable. Short answer, yes, but it then you have to adjust how much protein is in your dinner. And that’s why Jason doesn’t ask questions and just sticks to the plan.
[Producer’s Note: Or Jason could just quit and eat pizza and ice cream for breakfast]
I Love You Call
As a sign of the times, we’ve pivoted the I Love You Call from calling random business to calling your loved ones who might need an extra boost in these trying times. Today we called listener Kelly’s friend Mark. Kelly is a bartender and Mark has been one of her regulars for years now. Since the coronavirus ruined 2020, she obviously hasn’t been able to see him. Like Deb, Mark is a huge Stephen King fan so she was looking forward to discussing King’s new book, If It Bleeds. If you’ve got someone who could use some extra love these days, let us know!
