Why Did Matty Healy Eat Raw Meat at The 1975 Concert?

Here’s Matty Casually Chewing Raw Meat on stage at the Madison Square Garden Show!

The 1975 are known for having a few artistic moments, usually paired with a deeper meaning for fans to speculate on. The band recently released their fifth studio album, Being Funny in a Foreign Language and now embark on their tour titled ‘At Their Very Best.’ The massive set features a two-story house set with interactive lights manipulated by the band members.

Matty loves to expand his on-stage role as a spectacle and partial villain to audience members, so new stunts like this are expected. Though I don’t think anyone could’ve saw this coming.

The video below captures his bites into raw steak before crawling into an old TV:

But WHY is he doing this?

Erica Campbell writes her perspective of the moment and ponders what it could have meant:

“Frontman (Matty Healy) is sat on a couch touching himself with one hand and balancing a cigarette with the other. He then kneels down on the stage, picks up what appears to be a piece of raw, bloody steak and unceremoniously takes a bite into it before crawling into a television screen. Is it a metaphor for the dangers of consumerism? A boundary-pushing merging of live art and music? Before the audience can answer those questions and make sense of the staggering moment, the music kicks in again.” – Erica

Later in the set Matty comments on how awkward that would’ve been to watch for audience members with their parents in the crowd, quoted  “It’s your fault for bringing your dad.” The band loves the shock value, drawing out many conclusions as to what this meant.

Maybe more shows on this new tour will reveal a pattern and clue us in on Matty’s train of thought. For now we will enjoy the show.
