101XPosure Artist Highlight Ft. Sunflower Bean

Nick Kivlen, Julia Cumming and Jacob Faber of Sunflower Bean

With a new EP under their wings, Sunflower Bean—the indie rock band from New York—are off to a great start in 2019. The EP King Of The Dudes follows their sophomore album Twentytwo in Blue which was co-produced by Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Jacob Portrait. The release of Twentytwo in Blue was a significant milestone in the band’s career—thanks to this, the band had more freedom to explore their sound with King Of The Dudes.

In the past, Sunflower Bean have been compared to the likes of many such as Fleetwood Mac, Blondie, and The Velvet Underground (just to name a few). But despite comparisons, the band has taken time in developing themselves to stand out among the rest. With a mixture of New Wave, Classic Rock, and dreamy guitar riffs, Sunflower Bean has been able to create a sound that many of us didn’t realize we were craving.

The band consists of guitarist Nick Kivlen, drummer Jacob Faber, and vocalist/bassist Julia Cummings. Although Kivlen and Faber grew up in the same Long Island suburb of Glen Head, it was while exploring the city of Brooklyn that the pair crossed paths with Cumming; from there, the rest is history. One factor that brought the trio close together was the fact that music had been a driving force in each one of their lives—one that influenced them each dramatically.

The band has now been together for almost 6 years, but they don’t plan on taking a break any time soon. Currently, the band is finishing up a tour with Interpol and will be performing at Governors Ball and Deer Shed Festival later this year.

If 2018 is any indication of what this year will be like, it’s going to be a good one for Sunflower Bean.
