UPDATE: Toto Covers Weezer’s “Hash Pipe” in Vancouver

This is Rivers Cuomo, frontman for Weezer, performing at Austin360 Amphitheater.

UPDATE (7/31): Last night in concert, Toto unveiled their “Hash Pipe” rendition for fans in Vancouver. “We figured since we were smoking hash since before they were born, that’s the one we should do,” Toto guitarist and vocalist Steve Lukather admitted before the band dived into their mainly unchanged version of the 2001 hit.

Watch it now:

When someone tweeted Rivers Cuomo, “it’s about time you bless the rains down in Africa,” what else could he do but accept the challenge? Sure enough, two months ago, Weezer released a cover of the ’82 Toto hit “Africa,” and it won the group their first radio hit in quite some time. Now, Toto are returning the favor, with their own rendition of “Hash Pipe,” from Weezer’s famed 2001 “Green Album.”  How did Toto land on such an interesting choice, you ask? “We wanted to do something rock ‘n’ roll,” Toto drummer Steve Porcaro told KROQ. “I love the band. I love their music. [Lead singer] Joseph [Williams] and I were listening to different ones trying to figure out which ones he’d like to sing and we settled on ‘Hash Pipe.’”

Toto’s “Hash Pipe” rendition is due out in a few weeks, until then, check out Weezer’s cover of “Africa” on 101X or streaming it until your co-workers hate you with the link below.
